The Dojo Kun

The Dojo Kun represents the moral and philosophical foundation of traditional Shotokan Karate. These principles, closely associated with the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, guide karate practitioners not only inside the dojo, but throughout everyday life.

Rather than focusing solely on physical technique, the Dojo Kun emphasizes character, discipline, humility, sincerity, and self-control — the essential spirit of Karate-do.

Seek Perfection of Character

Hitotsu, Jinkaku Kansei ni Tsutomeru Koto

Karate training is a lifelong journey of self-improvement. Through diligent practice, we polish our character, nurture humility, and strive to become better human beings both inside and outside the dojo.

Be Faithful

Hitotsu, Makoto no Michi o Mamoru Koto

Act with sincerity and honesty in all things. Show loyalty to your sensei, dojo, and fellow students, and live truthfully with a pure heart.

Foster the Spirit of Effort

Hitotsu, Doryoku no Seishin o Yashinau Koto

Progress in karate — and in life — comes through perseverance. Train with determination, never give up, and cultivate a strong and enduring spirit.

Respect Others

Hitotsu, Reigi o Omonzuru Koto

Courtesy and respect are the foundation of karate. Treat others with kindness and humility, and remember that respect begins and ends every training session.

Refrain from Violent Behaviour

Hitotsu, Kekki no Yu o Imashimuru Koto

Karate is a way of peace. True strength lies in self-control — never in aggression. Use your skills to protect, not to harm, and embody the principle:

“Karate ni sente nashi”
There is no first attack in karate.

The Spirit of the Dojo Kun

Together, these five precepts form the heart of Karate-do — guiding every student to train with integrity, discipline, respect, humility, and compassion while pursuing lifelong self-development through karate practice.
