Dojo Etiquette

Traditional dojo etiquette is an essential part of Karate-do. Respect, discipline, humility, and proper conduct are expected from all students both inside and outside the dojo.

Etiquette is not simply formality — it reflects the spirit of budo and helps create a respectful and focused training environment where all practitioners can develop together.

Basic Etiquette

- Arrive on time for training
- Bow when entering and leaving the dojo
- Show respect toward instructors and fellow students
- Listen carefully to the sensei
- Train sincerely and with a positive spirit
- Maintain discipline and focus during practice
- Help junior students whenever possible
- Bow before and after kumite practice
- Bow at the beginning and end of kata practice
- Keep your karate-gi clean and presentable
- Acknowledge instruction respectfully with “Oss”

Entering the Dojo

Students should bow upon entering and leaving the dojo as a sign of respect for the training place, instructors, fellow students, and the traditions of Karate-do.

Late Arrival

Students arriving late should bow before entering the training area and wait respectfully for the instructor’s permission before joining the class.

Dress Code

A clean white karate-gi should be worn during training. Uniforms should be kept neat and respectful, and belts tied properly before entering practice.

Spirit of Training

Karate training is not only physical practice, but also the cultivation of character, self-control, humility, perseverance, and mutual respect.

Training should always be approached with sincerity, discipline, and a willingness to continuously improve oneself through long-term practice.
